Things to Consider When Contemplating Owning a Pet Frog

So you are thinking about acquiring a frog as a pet thinking it would be an easy animal to own and take care of. Before you go out and purchase one from the pet store, there are a few things to consider before bringing one of these creatures into your home.

First and foremost, frogs require a lot of hard work in captivity. They need to be fed on a regular basis with diet requirements not easy to obtain. Most frogs, especially the small breeds, feed on live insects which will probably need to be bought at your local pet store on a regular basis. Some large breed frogs require larger food items such as mice.

There are many different types of frog species, each with their own individualized needs and care, including specific types of tanks that need to emulate the frog's natural habitat. A certain habitat type that your frog may require includes aquatic, terrestrial, arboreal or semi-aquatic. Each habitat type requires a specific temperature, humidity level, light requirement and substrate.

Your frog's tank will need to be cleaned on a regular basis due to the fact that frogs are highly susceptible to contaminants and wastes and will become sick very easily. When well taken care of, a frog in captivity can live up to 15 years so it will require a long-lasting commitment.
