There are many species of frogs, each with their own individualized requirements of care, housing and food. For the beginner frog owner, there are some species that are highly recommended due to their ease of care, active personality and hardiness. The best completely aquatic frog for the beginner is the African dwarf frog. It is small in size therefore very easy to care for. It is also a fairly active species so the beginner frog owner won't become too bored with their new pet. For those wanting a completely terrestrial frog, then the Oriental firebellied toad is highly recommended. Like the African dwarf frog, this toad is very easy to take care of, is fairly active and it doesn't get too large. The Oriental firebellied toad does very well in normal room temperatures, there are no hibernation requirements and all it needs for food is crickets and vitamin supplements. A good tree frog for beginners is the White's tree frog. It has an excellent personality but it does just sit around a lot so it might be a little boring for children. This species is the easiest and hardiest of the tree frogs and can be handled on a regular basis. Because their natural habitat is the rainforest, the White's tree frog will need humidity and it will appreciate having its tank sprayed with water once or twice a day. |
